Simply Strategic Student Ministry #4

Time management is a difficult thing for young pastors.  No, it’s a difficult thing for all pastors.  So it’s important to find a system that works for you.  I’ve done everything from TO DO lists to organizers, to come computer programs that work as well.  Each one has it’s own strengths so you have to figure one out.

Outlook or some kind of computer based calendar with alarms is a necessity.  This way you can set ongoing reminders so you don’t forget about something important.

Sometimes if I have alot of stuff to do in a week I will set my week up  on Monday so I get everything done.  This takes maybe an hour but as long as you set your schedule, you can get it all done.

Plan things that you’re going to do in blocks of time.  An hour, fifteen minutes, whatever you think the time is needed to accomplish the task.  It’s important to plan in “down time” in the schedule so your brain doesn’t explode.  Then get to work.  Make sure you listen to your alerts and move on.  At the end of the day, if there’s anything you didn’t get done, move it to the next day and adjust your schedule accordingly.

Alerts will remind you of something easily forgot like a monthly parent email you send out or an event you planned months ago but forgot about or your wife’s birthday.  Stuff like that is important not to forget.
